In many instances, the inflation of prices can be linked to rising fuel costs and inflation. Airlines have struggled to offset the increase in business expenses by using multiple tactics such as block out days and cutting the number of flights to certain destinations, but inevitably it comes down to raising airline ticket prices.
This trend of passing the expense of fuel and other expenses to customers is not uncommon at all. Most airlines will lower airline ticket prices during the low travel seasons to spark interest in travelers and then raise them again at the height of travel seasons.
Fluctuations in pricing such as this are frustrating to airline passengers to say the least. The earlier one buys his or her airline tickets, the better the cost structure for the tickets. Although this is true, the lower cost is not always an overly traveling budget saving discount. Airline ticket prices are high.
Many consumers attempt to purchase their airline tickets months in advance to get the best possible deal but this tactic doesnt work very well in many cases because there are thousands of would be travelers doing the exact same thing for popular flights. Supply and demand keeps prices high.
Then there is the obvious problem of needing a flight on the spur of the moment. OK, not everyone can schedule their travel months in advance. There is such a thing called spontaneity. Deciding to travel and wanting to leave in 2 days or less is common.
Ten out of fifteen people polled admit having been burned by the price of an airline ticket due to not knowing in advance that they would need to travel. Fifteen out of fifteen admitted changing travel plans in an effort to save money.
Lets face it, you should be able to purchase your airline tickets and travel whenever you want. However, purchasing airline tickets based on that desire would cost you big. Airline ticket prices are often fifty to seventy percent higher when purchased at the last moment.
Dont get me wrong. To save some cash, it is best to purchase your airline tickets as early as possible to avoid the jump in price. But if that isnt possible, it is imperative that you use the available online tools to offset the costs associated with spontaneous airline ticket purchases.
The Cheap Airline Tickets Toolbar at CheapAirlineTicketsToolbar dot com allows travelers to earn money for airline tickets so that they can fly without the usual wallet drain.
The Cheap Airline Ticket Toolbar interfaces with TypoBounty dot com. TypoBounty dot com is where companies seeking a very low advertising rate offer to pay web surfers for locating and reporting their web propertys errors. The companies are seeking to eliminate errors such as misspelled words, punctuation errors etc. With the average payout for a single error being over two dollars, financing ones need for airline tickets is no longer a problem.
Shop around for the best airline ticket prices. Do it as far out as possible and use online tools that help offset the sting of the tickets price. Happy travels!

The author, John Reed, is an avid traveler and has had the benefit of flying to some of the worlds most beautiful places. Travel is a very complex
product -- a whole series of products, in effect. In the
early days, at least, the companies that provided the
products were far more adept at providing than at selling.
Their customers were also very widely distributed
geographically. These and other factors created an
opportunity for entrepreneurs who agreed to represent the
products of many different travel suppliers to a local market
in exchange for a commission on the sale. That commission was
traditionally ten percent, although as in all selling
situations top producers were rewarded with higher
commissions, called "overrides" in the travel business.

The system of distributing travel products through a network
of travel agencies took hold and travel agencies themselves
came to look very much alike, sharing a great many common
features. They were storefront, retail businesses, located in
commercial districts of town, open during normal retail
business hours. In short, they were very much like the
clothing shops, boutiques, grocery stores, bookstores, and
other retailers with whom they shared the block. This picture
is what I call the "traditional" travel agency.

The traditional travel agency looks the way it does for many
reasons, but several concern us here. Mostly they have to do
with the airlines.

Airline tickets are written (or printed, now) on blank paper
called "ticket stock." In its blank form this paper is like a
blank, but valid, check. Anyone who has it can write a ticket
to anywhere for any value. Hence the term, "write your own
ticket." Ticket stock is extremely valuable and since it is
entrusted to travel agencies the airlines had a very valid
reason to ensure that their ticket stock was safe. So they
developed a set of rules that would tend to ensure that they
could trust the travel agents who were selling their tickets.

These rules included things like:

A business location in a commercial district. In other words,
the travel agency had to look and act like a "store."

A system of bonding, to assure the airline that the travel
agency owner was solvent and respectable and, therefore, not
likely to be tempted to do anything fishy with the airline's
precious ticket stock.

Another factor determining the look and feel of the
traditional travel agency is the computer. Travel agencies
were one of the first businesses to be extensively
computerized. The complex and expensive computerized
reservations systems (CRS) that made ticketing easy
encouraged even more centralization and "professionalism" in
the travel agent industry.

In other words, if you wanted to be a travel agent you had to
open a storefront agency with its high overhead and complex
computer systems. This took a lot of money. Of course, you
could also get trained to operate a CRS and go to work in a
storefront agency, and many agency owners started out just
this way.

This pattern, in turn, created another distinguishing
characteristic of the traditional travel agency: it was a
place to which would-be travelers came to talk to agents
sitting at a desk operating a CRS. Most travel agents became
"order takers." Of course, there were always exceptions to
this general rule. Many travel agencies employed "outside
agents" to hustle up business. These outside agents were, in
effect, free ranging inside agents who returned to the agency
and their CRSs to generate the airline tickets and other
bookings they had made outside. Some agencies used "bird
dogs" as they are called, people who sent customers into the
agency location where inside agents would cater to their
needs. Bird dogs performed a valuable service and were
compensated with a small percentage of any commissions that
resulted from their referrals. This was very much akin to the
"finder's fees" paid in other industries. Nonetheless, these
were exceptions that proved the rule: most travel agents were
reactive order takers tied to their desks and the CRSs that
sat on them.

All this began to change in the 90s thanks to a number of
interrelated trends, which we will discuss in the next
lesson.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This mini-course on becoming a home-based travel agent is
brought to you by the Home-Based Travel Agent Resource Center
and The Intrepid Traveler, publisher of a comprehensive home
study course for home-based travel agents.

For more information, visit:
http://www.HomeTravelAgency.com

The Banyu Biru Villa of Nirwana Gardens in Bintan Island Resort

The day I step in the resort Island of Bintan, will be the most awesome experience my family and I will remember for a long time.

Nice warm weather with nice, warm and friendly people. The Island resort is a beauty at its peak.We stayed at the Banyu Biru Villa of Nirwana Gardens. Its a very nice and cosy living facilities with a serene and garden setting with fountains in the middle of ponds that links to 3 or 4 bungalows.

It may get a little expensive in Bintan Resorts where major currencies are widely used more than the Rupiah itself..In fact when we were there almost all of our expenses are paid with Singapore dollars. The truth is, the majority of tourist there are Singaporeans as the islands is only a short 45 minute ferry ride away from each other.

In my opinion, Bintan resorts are a (cheap) and good destinations to go too if you need time away from the hustle and bustle of life..Time litrally..pass very very slow there..not a splendid place to shop though..nothing much for kids to do as well other than wade in the pool..but if you are there for the Sun, Sand and the sea..this is a place to go...not forgeting the golfers too.

My wife and I agreed to go there again soon..only this time..probably..just the 2 of us..heheh

Hidden cost of Air Travel

Today's Life section of the Singapore local English newspaper, The Straits Times, featured a full 2 page report on the 'Hidden Cost of traveling by air.

It is a little awkward, to know that , we have to pay more in taxes and surcharges, compare to the price of a return trip air ticket to destinations that is relatively, high in demand but low in advertised price.

Just a thought..why don't the airline carriers actually add all the necessary charges and taxes into the cost of the ticket itself?..wouldn't it be much less confusing (not to mentioned frustrating as well).

As a member of the public.. In general, if you are traveling to a major destination such as Orlando, Los Angeles, the Caribbean or the like then buying as a package may make a lot of sense. But as always shop around to make sure that buying individually is not cheaper. Don’t forget to also account for any service charges and taxes.

If on the other hand you are traveling to destination without a major airport nearby you should look at buying a package with a healthy dose of skepticism. Here is an example: Let’s say you intend on a vacation at Palm Cast, FL (beautiful stretch of beach approx 90 minutes south of Jacksonville and 35 Minutes north of Daytona Beach). If you are shopping for a package 9 times out of 10 the system will package the air in and out of Daytona Beach Airport. Daytona Beach is a small airport with little competition. The net result is on average higher airfares. Jacksonville on the other hand has more competition and offers service by several low cost carriers such as Southwest Airlines.

So, why am I telling you this? Because the last time I checked for a family of five it was significantly more expensive going with the package. Buying roundtrip airfare to Jacksonville, renting a minivan and booking the hotel accommodation all separately saved over $750 when compared to a package from Travelocity, Orbitz or Expedia.

Packages also often work really well for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children). Packages often let kids stay for free (if staying in the same room with the parents) or offer other freebies. If on the other hand you are a single parent or have more than 2 children a package may or may not be a good deal. Another weakness of many of the “package trip” booking engines is their inadequacy when incorporating requests for condo style (2+ bedroom, kitchen, etc.) accommodation. Frequently they do not find the places you are looking for or they present choices that do not apply or match your request.

Here is one good way to see whether or not a travel package will save you money:

1. Check all individual travel components separately (keeping alternate airports in mind). In addition if you have credit card miles or frequent flier miles check to see if you can use them (even if only for 1 or 2 in the party). If flights are blocked out or not available see if you can use them for car rental. Many credit card companies offer vouchers for car rentals. Applying those to a week or 10 days for a Minivan can save you $400 - $600 depending on where you are headed.

2. Once you have the total for all individual components open a new browser and see whether or not you can buy it cheaper as a package. Make sure to check several sites.

Travel packages can be a great way to get a bargain but don’t assume that it is always the case. Do your homework, read the fine print and keep in mind that sellers always make more money selling you a package rather than the individual components.

Kai Vorpahl has over 15 year travel industry experience of which the last 10 years have been in the online travel industry. He has worked in leadership positions for companies such as e-Travel (now part of Amadeus Global Travel Distribution), StudentUniverse (an online travel company focused on student travel) and CheapFlights (an online airfare directory displaying offers from their advertising partners) just to name a few. There have been many developments in the travel industry online world which has caused travelers to by-pass travel agents completely. Travelers are looking to the internet for ticket purchases to find cheap fares. Often online users are going straight to airlines for ticket purchasing, cutting out travel agents and online travel companies altogether. However, it has been discussed that online agencies are converting more online visitors to customers by creating a better online experience than airline web sites.

The world of online travel companies has developed and become an efficient and user-friendly method of making travel arrangements. If you are looking for an online travel agency, search for a company which will allow you to choose your own travel routes. An excellent online travel agency is one where they allow you to make the choices and they do all the work. Choose an online company which will search out and negotiate better travel rates, ensuring you receive the most affordable travel arrangement without compromising quality.

There are many benefits to online travel agencies, besides affordability, these are namely convenience and speed of services. With an online company customers can get a number of quotes from various online companies very quickly via the internet, this will ensure you get the best deal for the best price. Booking your travel arrangements online not only delivers a competitive quote, but you need not get into your car and travel to a shop. With these online services you can make all your travel arrangements without having to leave your home or place of business.

Online travel agents now offer all the services you will find with conventional travel agents, if not more. This informative article takes a closer look at things you need to know about Dubai.
The rich culture of the desert city of Dubai draws on its ancient Arabian heritage, vast modern technology and cosmopolitan luxuries. For centuries a land devoted mainly to herding and trade, Dubai was rocketed into modern times by the discovery of oil just off of its coast in 1966. Enormous riches funded by oil production have produced a native population which, in the main, is well educated, healthy, highly paid and liberal minded. Tourism is actively courted in Dubai, particularly in the impressive Palm Islands development.
Touted as the eighth world wonder, Palm Island is a an incredible tribute to engineering, design, and absolute opulence. Palm Island – Deira is the largest of the three Palm Islands. A unique man-made phenomenon, the Palm Islands can be seen from space by the naked eye. A trunk, a 41- frond crown, and a water- breaking crescent island form Palm Island – Deira. Nearly eight thousand villas and apartment homes, private and public beaches, shopping, recreation and sports facilities are included in the plans for this incredible development. Fantastic resorts and attractions are also available for those looking for the ultimate upscale vacation experience.
Sport is a huge part of the culture of Dubai, and is reflected in the many entertainment options open to visitors of the city. Polo fields and golf courses abound. The richest horse racing event in the world, The Dubai World Cup, is run on a Dubai track and attracts visitors from around the world. Water sports from the most adventurous to the most tranquil are available in the warm waters off of Dubai's white sand beaches. Viewing some of the region's more traditional sporting events such as camel racing, dhow sailing and falconry should also not be missed.
Sophistication is one of the hallmarks of the Dubai – and larger United Arab Emerates – culture. World- class cosmopolitan restaurants sit next to local establishments serving the best in local cuisine and fresh juices. Indian, Lebanese, and Thai flavours are often featured in the most popular restaurants. Many of Dubai's best restaurants are inside of, or within easy walking distance of, the city's hotels, which are allowed to serve alcohol despite the city's Islamic roots. Prices range from very affordable to astronomically high, depending on one's tastes, and menus and service are most often available in English as well as the native Arabic.
So far, we've uncovered some interesting facts about Dubai. You may decide that the following information is even more interesting.
Shopping in Dubai is amongst the best in the world, with designer boutiques offering the most exclusive fashions and products to savvy shoppers. Jewelery, vehicles, electronics, décor items and sports equipment are also common purchases, often offered at low prices. There are no local taxes on purchases, and for those skillful at bartering, the souks (markets) offer vast opportunities for bargains on indigenous goods. Must-see sightseeing sites in Dubai include the Gold Souk, the Deira Covered Souk, the Spice Souk, the Palm Island development, Al Boom Tourist Village, Bedouin Village, the Dubai World Trade Centre, and the Jumeirah Mosque. Archaeological enthusiasts will enjoy the Al Ghusals, Al Sufooh and Jumeirah excavation sites featuring graveyards and artifacts more than 1,000 years old.
Dubai's ultra- contemporary architecture, panoramic ocean vistas, beautiful beaches, and historical sites are all fetching subjects for photography buffs, but it is wise to refrain from taking photos of government facilities, sea- and air ports, and military installations. Permission should also be asked and granted before photographing the local population, particularly Muslim women, who may be offended at having their photo taken.
Highly accessible to international traffic, Dubai is served by 90 airlines. Major European centres such as London are only seven hours away by plane with regular in- and out- going flights.
Arabic is the official language of Dubai, but written and spoken English is heavily used in the business and commercial sectors as well as in the tourism and entertainment industries. Dubai is a progressive Islamic country. Respect for local customs and religious traditions is expected and appreciated, but not to the extremes of some Islamic- ruled areas. In return, the Dubai people offer tolerance for differing lifestyles. Women are not discriminated against and may travel freely unescorted. Western visitors are able to dress as they like, however modesty in clothing is recommended. Limit very short, tight, or revealing items of clothing. The local population has adopted some styles of western dress, but it is most common to see men wearing the traditional white dishdasha or khandura robe and gutra (headdress), and women wearing modest black abaya robes and a head scarf over their regular clothing. These styles of dress suit the religious requirements of the Islamic population and offer protection from the hot desert sun.
Dubai's weather is picture perfect for most of the year, combining the best features of a sub-tropical, arid climate. Rain is very infrequent, falling an average of only five days each year (mostly during the winter season), but the temperature can vary by nearly 40 degrees Celsius between 10 degrees and 48 degrees Celsius.
Demand for property in Dubai has surged in recent years, driven by a burgeoning population of nearly four million people and the recent ability of foreigners to hold real- estate. Dubai's safe lifestyle, positive tourism investment potential, favorable tax rates and perceived high property value have all contributed to the current interest in buying property in the city. In addition to the variety of hotels, resorts and other standard tourist accommodation options, private accommodations from apartments to luxury villas located on secluded beaches are available for sale and rent in Dubai.
If you learned anything new about Dubai in this article, you should file the article where you can find it again.

This article on Dubai was brought to you by daily travel air.
Article Source: http://www.articlecube.com

Chose Your HoneyMoon Vacation Wisely

Four Best Vacation Places For Honeymooners by Peter Wilson
A honeymoon is an unforgettable holiday that every newly married couple embarks on, before establishing their marital life. There are a number of exotic places that a couple can visit and travel agents are the best informed to help with the final choice. The US alone has so many exquisite places to visit.
Hawaii has been ranked as the number one honeymoon destination for decades now. Sun-kissed beaches, azure water, hidden coves, world class accommodation and the delicious cuisine make Hawaii special. Popular and incredibly beautiful, Hawaii is a lovers paradise. For those who are sports enthusiasts, Hawaii is ‘the’ place to be in to enjoy amazing water sports. Florida offers something for everyone and its itinerary of must see places is so long that tourists are often confused about where to go and what to leave out. Starting from Walt Disney World to the wonders of Orlando, Palm Beach, Miami, Daytona and the Florida Keys, the place is amazing. Along with sightseeing, Florida also offers all its guests lavish accommodation and the most exhilarating assortment of water sports.
Las Vegas is at number four not because it lacks something, but because it has a bit more than a couple on a honeymoon can expect. Las Vegas is also famous as the ‘city that never sleeps’ and is known for gambling and quick weddings, besides sightseeing. This city offers every couple on a honeymoon an experience of a lifetime.
Apart from these places, other hot honeymoon destinations in the US are California (Wine Country), Pennsylvania (Poconos), Louisiana (New Orleans) and almost all the southern states on the Gulf Coast.

Peter Wilson regularly writes newsletters on information similar to Benidorm and Costablanca. However, as with any culture, Germans have mannerisms that are unique to them. Since social etiquette is considered important in every society and Germans are no different, visitors that take a small amount of time to familiarize themselves with what Germans consider good manners will find that locals will often appreciate and even more warmly accept them into their country. Shaking Hands Germans typically wait until introduced by a host to shake hands. Typically, older parties in a group or more senior persons reserve the right to extend their hand for a handshake first. Attendees of small parties will always take the time to shake hands with one another when greeting, as opposed to larger functions where hand shakes are very rarely performed. The act of shaking hands in passing is considered rude. If one takes the time to shake hands, it is considered a precursor to at least a brief chat. Additionally, it is considered to rude to shake hands while the other hand is in your pocket. In formal settings, it is still considered custom to kiss a lady’s hand when introduced, though the lips should never actually touch the hand. When being introduced to adults, little German girls will occasionally courtesy in greeting. Furthermore, unlike in the United States, children will rarely thank someone for a compliment. Addressing Others in Germany The female term “Fraulein” is only used to address particularly young, unmarried girls. The shorter “Frau” is used to address older, unmarried young ladies and women since it is considered a more mature greeting. Also unlike in the United States, a married woman is not addressed by her husband’s first name (e.g. Mrs. John Smith), but by her own first name (e.g. Frau Jane Smith). Common Business Etiquette in Germany “Du” and “Sie” The method of addressing others by saying “you” is divided into the formal and informal manners of “Du” and “Sie.” “Du” is considered informal and should be reserved only for close acquaintances, friends and family. To avoid seeming disrespectful when meeting new persons, especially in a formal or business environment, it is generally accepted that “Sie” is the proper form to use. Attire American standards of business dress have relaxed in certain niche industries in recent years, but that doesn’t mean that the same is true of Germans. It is typically customary for business attire to be worn in nearly every business setting. Jeans, T-shirts, and similar clothing will typically be frowned upon. When in doubt, always opt to possibly slightly overdress than to take the risk of under-dressing. Meetings and Functions Unlike many other cultures, Germans will typically send invitations that outline not only when a meeting or function will begin but also when it will end. It would be considered good manners to use this time as a queue to bid a proper farewell. Though no one will expect every one to jump up and run out the door at the exact time, it can be considered rude to ignore the outlines set up by the hosts.

The Worlds Favorite Continent

Travel Asia by BestTripGuide.com
Traveling Asia is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Now this may bring to mind images of having to smuggle a microfilm past some dodgy russian customs ala James Bond, but the reality is nowhere near as exciting or dangerous - which is great news for the budget traveller. The even better news is that with a little know how, any adult can act as a courier and score free and deeply discounted flight tickets to the destination of their choice.
It's completely legal and can save you thousands in saved airfare every year. Courier companies are continually on the lookout for willing travellers to carry their items overseas. There is nothing sinister about it and nothing is hidden from the authorities - the traveller is paid with a deeply discounted (and sometimes free) air ticket. According to a survey by the Air Courier Association the standard saving that travellers get when they act as a courier is 85% on the normal flight price. There isn't a travel agent in the world that will match such a discount.
So what are your responsibilities as a courier? Well it's as simple as turning up to the airport on time and meeting the courier companys representative at the destination airport. As soon as you walk through the customs area at your destination, your job is over.
What are the drawbacks of this deeply discounted travel? Well for a start you're probably only going to be allowed one carry on bag as your luggage - so learning how to travel light & pack efficiently is essential. It's also important to have some degree of flexibility in terms of when you're able to fly, though usually you can get many flights comfortably in advance. You also need to be at least 18 and obviously have a valid passport.
Assuming you're ok with these drawbacks, you can really fly to just about any destination at incredibly low costs.
Ready to go? The whole world awaits you!

Discover how to travel at great discounts & even for free at: Travel Free For Life
Article Source: http://www.articlecube.com

The Very Best Ultrasonic Spas in Asia

Top Destination Spas In Asia by Song Meng Tan
A destination spa has the purpose of providing visitors with opportunities to improve their health and well being and learn to make better lifestyle choices. Are you an exchange student? Are you travelling overseas for less than twelve months? Are you teaching overseas? Are you working overseas?
Have you thought about your health cover?
Of course, we’d all like to think we’ll be alright, however it is wise to expect the unexpected. Unfortunately, when you travel abroad you do face increased risks to your health and safety. We do tend to think that we will be able to receive adequate medical care in Public or Government Hospitals, free of charge, and for a quick one-off visit this may well be the case. Public hospitals can be very good and the quality of medical and surgical care may well be excellent but the other services offered may not be up to the standard that you have come to expect. What if something develops that takes longer to cure? The bills can mount up alarmingly. How much will it all end up costing? Have you thought about pregnancy, and the pre and post natal care that you would want to receive for yourself, or wife and newborn baby? Would you want your sick child to spend several days or maybe even weeks in a Government hospital in a crowded public ward where most of the staff may not be able to speak English very well?
This is where we come in. We expect the nightly news to be filled with stories of airlines going “belly up,” mergers, or terrorist attacks. After you see the same story a dozen times, it stops being news. Right? Well, for frequent airline travelers, it’s all news. So, here are a few tips to consider when choosing an airline.
Price is usually the biggest factor in deciding which airline you want to use. However, it pays to be smart about the pricing. Just because the ticket price may be a little higher, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the deal. For example, if you live near a small airport that can transport you to a larger airport for your connections, it may be smarter to pay the extra money to take the smaller plane near home than to drive to the larger one farther away. Will the cheaper price on the larger plane really save you money? How much will you spend to get to the larger airport? How much more aggravation will you have to endure? Is it worth it? If the savings is not substantial, pay the extra money to travel from your hometown airport to the larger one. You will be glad you did.
Flexibility in your scheduling can save you money. If you can travel mid-week instead of on the weekend, you may be more likely to pay a better price for your ticket. Since the weekends – Thursday through Sunday – are the busiest travel days of the week, airlines take advantage of it. Departure flexibility will also allow for a lower priced airfare. Leaving very early is less expensive than leaving mid morning. The more flexible you can be, the better price you will pay for your ticket.
Although discount airlines like Air Tran and Jet Blue are usually cheaper, there isn’t any one airline that always has the lowest prices. In fact, if you catch them right, any airline can have the “best” fare. The best time to do this is on Tuesday night between midnight and 1 a.m. This is when every airline computer changes its fares. The fares are then made available to the public.
On-time flights is another factor to consider when deciding on an airline. Make sure you check each airline’s statistics to find out what their on-time percentage rates are. Since these may change considerably over time, you should check regularly. Since flights can – and often are – delayed, it may be better to drive than take the chance of being stuck on a delayed flight. This is something to think about if the trip is relatively close.
Lost luggage is yet another factor to consider. No one wants to have their luggage sent to Mayberry when their trip is in Cancun. Carry-on luggage has therefore become more popular with travelers. It’s easier to keep your personal belongings with you to be sure they’re safe and secure than to have to wait at the luggage carousel to see if it happens to come around. These statistics should also be checked on a regular basis, especially if you cannot put all of your gear on a carry-on.
Just one more thing to check before you make your purchase. Check for “overbooking.” This is happening more and more, and people are being denied access to the flight that they have purchased.
So, which is the better airline? To find out, research.

Read more from Joe Goertz at: mytravel-magazine.com
Article Source: http://www.articlecube.com

A Case Study Of The Singapore Girl Saga

When Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced that they were opening up their account for other advertising agencies to tender, it created a pitching frenzy in the industry. After all, SIA have been with Batey Ads for 35 years since they first started the airlines. And the inevitable question predictably came up: Will the Singapore Girl, the icon of SIA, stay or will she go?
I found even the slightest idea of dumping the Singapore Girl... erm... Dumb! Below is my raw, politically incorrect, heavy-dose-of-reality, might-piss-you-off opinion on the issue. If you are easily offended, skip this. Read at your own risk.
1. The Singapore Girl has become synonymous with SIA. It is one of the airline industry's most prominent figures. In fact, it is also one of the most recognizable icons for Singapore. It has even earned a place in Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London. When was the last time you heard about an icon for a service industry immortalized there?
Several months back, in an article about branding Singapore, several foreigners from various countries (including USA, China, India, etc) were asked what came to mind when they think of Singapore. SIA came up tops, due mainly to the Singapore Girl, I believe. The Singapore girl is more than just SIA's brand, it is Singapore's brand too.
Now, would you then scrap away such a powerful brand? Would you take away the swoosh icon from Nike? Would you scrap the stallion marquee from Ferrari? Would you dump the apple logo from Apple?
Of course not! "Retire it gracefully" That's just plain stupid.
2. The Singapore Girl was born 35 years ago. When other airlines were focusing on displaying the aircraft and safety features, Ian Batey (the genius behind this icon), went in the opposite direction and focused on service. That was just brilliant!
Give the customers what they aspire to have (their emotional wants). We make any decisions, including buying decisions, with our emotions. We use our logic to justify our decisions. Aircraft and safety features appeals to logic. Exceptional service appeals to the emotions.
The result? Other airlines have been playing catch up and trying to portray their service to be just as good, if not better. Not many have succeeded. When it comes to the perception of receiving top-notch, luxurious service, SIA is still at the top. In fact it is seen as the benchmark of exceptional service, even in other industries.
In a similar scenario, Creative Technology (another famous Singaporean brand renowned for its sound card and MP3 players) focused on features and logic when marketing their MP3 players. In contrast, Apple focused on the emotional wants (being hip) of their prospects. And we know what happened.
In the Singaporean newspaper, someone commented that SIA should change to more 'thought-provoking' ads, instead of the emotion-based Singapore Girl ads. Question: Would Steve Jobs change Apple's cool and hip advertisement to 'thought-provoking' ads?
Nahhh....!
3. There were several comments that said that the Singapore Girl is stereotyping the 'subservient Asian woman'. Many of the most famous brands and icons are built from stereotypes. Stereotyping is powerful because people connect with them. Donald Trump: The stereotypical business mogul who wheels and deals to get to get what he wants. Is there something more to his character? Of course.
James Bond: The stereotypical hero who kills the bad guy, saves the day, gets the girl(s) and still enjoys his martini. Is there something more to him? Of course.
The Samurai: The stereotypical Japanese warrior, always full of honor and wears layers of clothing... Is there something more to him? Of course.
The point is: When used correctly, stereotyping is an excellent tool to create a powerful brand. Too many brands died an early death because they were not stereotyped soon enough. A strong brand stands for certain specific values. Trying to represent everything (like many start up brands) only confuses the market. The market will eventually ignore what they can't figure out.
But is representing the 'subservient Asian woman' a good stereotype/position to have?
4. As Ian Batey wrote in his book, the Singapore Girl is supposed to be the embodiment of "natural femininity, natural grace and warmth, and a natural, gentle way with people". Many will agree that that is the appeal of the Asian women, in contrast to the strong, hard, independent Western women (stereotypically speaking). I know this is not politically correct. But let's put aside political-correctness ideology for a while...
Would you rather be served by a friendly, polite and constantly smiling young lady, or a strong, hard, independent woman? The answer is obvious!
Notice that I didn't pit the Asian against the Western. It is because it is NOT the race, but rather the attitude that is critical. The right attitude projects the right impression (exceptional service) to the prospects. The rest; the Pierre Balmain kebaya, the make up, the bun-up hair, the stringent requirements, etc, are there to support and ensure the brand image is congruent.
Just take a look at those Asian spa ads that feature the spa hostess. They will most probably be in the 'subservient Asian woman' role. Why? Because it gives the impression of "natural femininity, natural grace and warmth, and a natural, gentle way with people".
An interesting note: One of the biggest, best selling drama serial in recent years that has been distributed all around the world including in the US (it is a huge hit there) is the Korean drama Jewel In The Palace. What is it about? It is a story about a traditional, gentle, graceful lady who is full of warmth.
Princess Diana is such an icon because she was perceived as a gentle, graceful lady who was always full of warmth. Mother Theresa left such a legacy largely because she was perceived as a gentle, graceful woman who was full of warmth. The Singapore Girl is such a huge icon because she is perceived as a gentle, graceful lady who is full of warmth, and able to provide wonderful service. I'd say she is in great company.
5. Another comment suggested for the Singapore Girl to change her attire and wear a business suit, just like the other airlines. This suggestion is even more dangerous than scrapping the Singapore Girl itself!
The kebaya is so tightly linked to the Singapore Girl. If you remove it, it is effectively removing the Singapore Girl. With the help of the Singapore Girl, SIA became a leader in the airline industry with many others trying to follow and emulate it. It is ridiculous for SIA to then turn around and follow their followers.
Here in Singapore, we have this chain of famous bakery shop (similar to the Krispy Kreme donut shops in the West) called BreadTalk. This chain became the talk of the town because of one signature bread--the 'Floss' bread that consists of a fluffy bun topped with light cream and meat floss (you can call it the Asian version of beef jerky but much much fluffier). It also featured a breakthrough, modern shop interior that defied what the normal décor of bakeries. In no time, all the rest of the bakeries (even those in the 'rural' areas) tried to follow (read: copy) their success.
